A plan to revive the town

Stratford Central Area Revival Project

‘SCARP’ is the project voted by members as our highest priority.  We recognise and in principle support the proposals by Stratford Society (the ‘historic spine’) and World Class Stratford (the ‘walkable core’) to improve certain streets in Stratford town centre.  However, we think that those proposals are too focused on specific streets, and don’t sufficiently cover essential issues like transport, parking, seating, toilets and policing.  And we want to see more widespread improvements, for example in the standard of street-level retail frontages.  Local planning guidelines on shop frontages already dictate that signage and materials must be appropriate to Stratford as a heritage town, but we have compiled a dossier showing that these guidelines have been widely ignored.   It’s on our website along with the SCARP proposal – here and here.

A report has been compiled (April.2009) updating the progress on SCARP and this can be seen here.

You might like to look at the guidelines and let us know of other cases where they’ve been ignored.  Send us a photo, too, if you can.  A small prize for the best example received!

So our SCARP’ aims to build a recognisable identity and character to Stratford as a whole, so that we don’t finish up with a handful of ‘museum’ style streets surrounded by poorly-controlled tacky modern developments.  It’s a long term aim, certainly, but an important principle.
